Mushroom Schnitzel @ O & D Pub

The O & D Pub is a bar and restaurant in Khoksung on the road to Chaiyaphum, a few minutes from the large PTT by the Khon Kaen bypass junction near Joho. It was opened by a lovely German chef called Detlef in about 2005. They are open daily from 11:30am though are closed on Mondays as many other restaurants choose to do. From Tuesday to Friday, they play music videos on a projector, and on Saturdays and Sundays, they show the football (when it's the season). They have the normal beer selection.

The menu has a great selection, and is updated constantly. Some of the classics include (all home made) goulash with noodles, chili con carne, German Sausage, fish and chips, spaghetti and much more including steaks, cordon bleus, gyros, a huge rack of ribs and on and on and on! Every plate is enormous, so make sure you are hungry and that you don't fill up on snacks or too many delicious starters. The garlic bread is very good.

My favourite thing on the menu (although I have been told the goulash is a real winner, I have still to get round to trying it) is the mushroom schnitzel, often referred to as a jäger schnitzel (or hunter schnitzel) for about 200 Baht. It's a giant piece of breaded pork, covered in a mushroom gravy topped with sliced tomato, served with chips and a red and white cabbage salad with shreds of carrot. The schnitzel is also available with a bacon and cheese topping, and both are terrific and real fillers.

Open: 11:30am - 10:00pm (Closed on Mondays)
The kitchen closes at 10:00pm every night, but he stays open until midnight at the weekends.

Directions: Take the 205 out of Korat to Chaiyaphum. Pass through Joho junction and then under the Khon Kaen by-pass Road. You'll come to a PTT station on your left. You must take the next small soi on your left, just 500 metres down at a small sala bus stop with a yellow roof (if you come to a school, you have gone too far). Drive down the windy road for exactly 1.7km and avoid turning left at the first junction that looks like a turning. Take the second opportunity to turn left at a slanted T-junction. The O&D Pub sign is visible on your left, and you will have to take another left to get there. Good luck, it's worth it! PL
