Extend your tourist visa @ Dan Kwien Immigration

If you're visiting Thailand on a 60 day Tourist Visa and you decide that you want to stay in the Kingdom a little longer, a 30 day extension to the visa is available from a few miles outside the city.

The Immigration office covering Korat city is situated in Dan Kwian which is a village around 14 km from the Hua Talay Tesco Lotus on the road to Chok Chai. In order to find the office drive straight through Dan Kwian village, which is basically one long straight road with pottery shops on either side, until you get to the sharpish right hand turn at the end of the straight. Go around this turn then look for the signs to the immigration office on your left hand side. Then turn as indicated by the signs about 100 meters after the end of the sharp turn. Proceed up this road for about 500 meters then turn right as signposted then turn left about 100 meters up the small road. If you're not driving then use a taxi or tuk tuk, both of which should know where the immigration office is (just ask to go to the 'To Mo').

It handles all immigration procedures including annual extensions, 90 Day reporting and extensions of tourist visas.

In order to extend your 60 day tourist visa you will need to visit the office and take your passport, a passport photograph and the receipt from your hotel or a receipt from the owner of the house or condo that you have rented for your holiday.

You will be greeted by an immigration officer who will ask you the purpose of your visit and then give you the appropriate forms to fill in and a queuing number. After you have filled in the two forms provided and glued your passport photo to the back of one of them, you will need to photocopy the relevant pages from your passport -  your ID page, the page showing your tourist visa and the page showing your last entry stamp into the Kingdom, as well as your hotel/house receipt. Photocopying is available in the small office on the left hand side at the back of the office. It costs 2 Baht per A4 sheet.

It's then time to sit and wait for your number to be called. This can be immediately or can take a while, but the office is normally quite quiet so you shouldn't be waiting to long. Certain times of year can be horrendous, though.

When your number is called the officer will check all your papers, input the details into a computer, then put the relevant stamps in your passport and ask for the 1,900 Baht fee. They will then pass the forms onto the office manager who authorises the extension. You will then be given your passport back and have another 30 days to enjoy your holiday.

Please note that you don't have to extend your Tourist Visa on the day it ends, you can extend it up to five working days prior to the end date. This is useful if your visa ends on a weekend day when the office is closed.

Dan Kwian Immigration Office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 16:30, it is also open over the lunch-break for those already waiting, though they may ask you to come back after lunch if they are overloaded. It is closed on all Public Holidays.
