Jalapeno Burger @ Hip Industry

Hip Industry is a modern gastropub with a huge and interesting mixed menu and a remarkable imported draft beer list. I believe this to be the only place that you can get imported draft beer in Korat (as of the time of writing, though no doubt this will change soon at Korat's current rate of growth!)

Hip Industry is a very nice place to go for lunch. They didn't bring the food particularly quickly, so I would recommend getting there with plenty of time to spare or going early to avoid the lunch crowd if you are busy.

It has the feel of a fancy area in Bangkok, and is quite unlike anything you will have seen in Korat. The menu includes Thai classics, fusion pasta dishes, lasagna, carbonara, burgers (larb tord, jalapeno, fish, deluxe cheese), salmon dishes and roast lamb. Unbelievable variety and the burgers are just 120-140 Baht.

I tried the jalapeno burger for lunch and was impressed. I think it makes the top 5 burger list in Korat pretty comfortably. It had a lot of flavour, with some added herbs. I think it had rosemary and maybe some thyme, so the burger patty was in a league of its own. It was pretty big too, though the meat was a little dry and could have done with a few less minutes in the pan. The bun was standard (possibly Makro) and they put the normal Thai butter on it so it had a very slightly sweet flavour. I will ask for it without butter next time. The bun also contained onion, yellow pepper, lettuce and some prik yuak that had been soaked in vinegar to give a taste remarkably close to that of jalapenos. It was served on a large plate with crinkle cut chips and a fancy drizzle of ketchup. If you order their fries, they have three very tasty dipping sauces (spicy, creamy and a mayoey dip) so I would recommend asking for extra sauce to go with your burger.

They have a big wine list and plenty of beers to choose from, as well as their own brand of bottled water. Very swanky and well presented. Other soft drinks are also available.

Overall, the place is a definite win. The service was good, with polite, well presented waitresses who were friendly and helpful. The table was well set and the cutlery has to be up there with some of the best I have ever used in Thailand. The ambiance in the restaurant is nice too. They play mellow western music at a good volume (though not the usual lift/airplane landing remix versions you hear all too often in just about every coffee shop nowadays).

I highly recommend this as one of Korat's coolest new venues. Great place to sit outside too.
