Isan Food @ Baan Tam Tam

There are lots of good places to get Isan food in Korat city centre, but it's difficult to know where to find really good quality. Som tam and gai yang can vary so much, and it's a risk I am not always willing to make if I have a short lunch break from teaching. I need a place that has a lady who is prepared to clean the som tam bowl of all balaa so I can be assured I won't get any nastiness in my meal.

Raan Baan Tam Tam is opposite the Shell petrol station in town, not far from Anuban School on the corner of Yommarat Road and Jagree Road. It is always full and offers quick, clean food of a decent quality. It is pretty much always rammed at lunch time, but it still turns food out very quickly, so there is no need to queue for long.

Not only do they offer grilled chicken, a huge som tam menu and barbecued pork neck (kor moo yang), they also have a selection of gaeng curries, a variety of different labs (including pork, duck and chicken) and Thai style pork scratchin's. It is a good restaurant to go as a group for a big lunch, but you can also just grab a bit of som tam and chicken for a take away. It comes to about 90 Baht all in and they use all fresh ingredients.

This place is worth a visit if you are ever looking for lunch in the Old Town.
