Pad See Ew @ Phon Saen Gate

Pad see ew is a Chinese style flat noodle dish that is very popular in Korat. The dish contains large, flat, white rice noodles, stir fried with kale leaves and stalks, pork (or chicken), egg and soy sauce. It is served with a sachet of chili powder and sugar, as well as a sachet of vinegar with a slice of jalepeno chili. I like the chili, but steer clear of the sugar. The name of the dish comes from the soy sauce (pronounced 'see you'), which is also common at some of the Japanese restaurants in town, where you can order chicken teriyaki or bbq chicken see ew.

As a teacher working right by the moat, I have found a great little rice shop that does noodle and rice dishes for about 40 baht, all served in a large box (piset size). It is run by 2 sisters who opened the place in 1998 (Pa Ting and Pa So), who are there everyday doing breakfast, lunch and dinner for a large portion of the neighbouring workers. The shop has a real Chinese feel to it with clutter everywhere, but if you are looking for a quick lunch, it is worth knowing about.

One plate of noodles is ok if you aren't too hungry, but you may end up needing a snack later in the afternoon. You could also try their pad Thai, kuay teow or stir fried chicken in basil.
