Serious Sausage Platter @ Chez Andy

Well, I don't know where to begin with this one. This really is the ultimate sausage sensation, and it is available in Korat!

Chez Andy is a notoriously high end restaurant in the centre of Korat near the night bazaar. I, myself have lived in Korat for 10 years and have never been until now. A regret I will have to live with for the rest of my days... In fact, the owner, Andreas, has created the finest dining experience in Nakhorn Rathasima, with a fantastic menu and a wonderful amount of flair in the presentation. The outside area, on arrival, is covered by a marquee and is akin to a quaint European restaurant in a quiet little church square. There is also an air con section inside. There was initially another Chez Andy on Koh Samui, but it closed back in April 2011.

The tables have nice table cloths, and each one is equipped with a tall pepper grinder, Tabasco sauce and a lovely basket of both white and brown crusty homemade bread. I asked for a bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dunk the bread in, which was a real win.

Now down to the business end of Chez Andy... Having looked at the menu in a bewildered stupour for over 20 minutes, I finally had the courage to back myself and order something. I still had FOMO (fear of missing out), looking around at the other dishes arriving on the other customers tables (especially when I saw the 15 inch BBQ skewers dangling off a metal spike), but finally decided to go for the ultimate sausage fest.

What you get:
  • a pork knuckle of your choice (fried, smoked or slow cooked)
  • a wiener schnitzel
  • a cordon bleu
  • 2 fresh farmer sausages
  • 2 weißwürste
  • 2 wiener sausages
  • 2 knackwürste
  • 2 veal sausages
  • 2 smoked pork sausages
  • a schüblig
  • 2 saucisson vaudoise...

...and the opportunity to take a picture of you with a plate that is big enough to act as a bed when you're finished. It comes with salad sprawled around the side of the platter and with real lemon for the schnitzel and cordon bleu. A really impressive display and one that is certainly enough for up to eight people, though it is recommended for 3-6. Side dishes of boiled potatoes, sauerkraut or red cabbage are recommended.

The drinks menu is excellent, with local and imported beers, and a large selection of wines, spirits and cocktails available. I stuck to San Miguel, served in a posh glass with a little bit of ice.

Andreas, the owner made his way out to greet us shortly after our arrival and this added to the very comfortable atmosphere in a fine restaurant. Certainly not what I am used to in Korat, I will be visiting again soon, and working my way through the comprehensive European menu. Sausages, steaks, pizzas, pastas and meats to die for. The prices are not cheap, but you get a hell of an experience, and you won't leave wanting more!

A VIP customer card is available, which gives you 10% off all food and drinks. Ask for more information at the end of your meal.

Chez Andy also has it's own free Tuk tuk service, so if you want to be picked up and dropped off at your home or hotel just call the restaurant.

Price: 1850 Baht - for a meal that will feed up to six.

Open: 11:00am - 11:00pm Monday - Saturday (Closed Sunday)
