Stay at the Kasemsarn Hotel @ Chanthaburi

If you are looking for a quaint riverside getaway, in a province with natural beauty and plenty of stunning waterfalls, try Chantaburi. It's about 5 hours drive away, through Kabinburi and Sa Kaew, but it is a lovely little town with a cute river that has lots of atmospheric waterside restaurants and bars with live music scattered along the side of the river bank. It has the same sort of feel as Chiang Khan in Loei province, in the north of Isan.

I find it the perfect place to stop off if I am heading to Koh Chang - just off Trat. I usually stay at The Kasemsam Hotel, which is just a hundred metres from the river, and very close to a fine selection of restaurants and bars. Chanthaburi provides an entertaining evening and comfy place to stay, and you can drive on in the morning to get to Laem Ngop (the pier for Koh Chang) in about 45 minutes.

Standard rooms start at 900 Baht, but they also have fancy suites that go up in price. They are often very busy so it is good idea to book in advance, especially over public holiday weekends. The hotel only has 60 rooms and it is one of the nicest places to stay in the town.

The rooms are well furnished with a modern style, and the whole hotel has a cool, open centre, overlooking the car park. There are benches and tables to sit and enjoy a morning coffee outside in the shade before it gets too hot. The rooms are always clean and are well equipped with the basics that you need; aircon, power shower, fridge and satellite tv.

The fridges don't have a minibar, but you do get 2 free bottles of water. If you would like anything else to drink, you can either order in from room service or grab something from the fridge next to the check in desk.

The hotel is right opposite the market road, so you are literally 2 minutes away from the centre of the city, where you can get song-thaew or motor bike taxi to see the sights of beautiful Chantaburi.

Standard rooms do not include breakfast, but the Deluxe and Suite rooms (starting at 1500 Baht) do. If your room doesn't come with breakfast, one can be ordered for 150 Baht. I recommend paying the little bit extra for the breakfast, as you get a choice of an American style or a typical Thai style breakfast, both are very nice. Beside the foyer is a coffee/soda/waffle shop, where the waffles are very tasty.
