Thai Fusion @ Krua 9 x 9

Krua 9 x 9 offers some of the best meals in Korat, in wonderful surroundings at a very reasonable price. Situated between the Mall road and the Suranaree 2 Rd, it is in a quiet area and has a wonderfully natural feel to it (be reminded to take some bug spray if you are wearing shorts).

Having been before, I had to reorder the chicken massaman curry. This dish really does speak to me. The chicken is delicious and has an almost dry rub massaman sauce on it so the flavour is intense. A rich peanut sauce and cashew nuts give the chicken a sweet flavour and wonderful texture when combined with the onions and other ingredients.

We also ordered the soft shell crab and pomelo salad (yam som ao pu nim), which had lots of crab meat, and a superb jus that combined the spices of the crab meat with the sour fruitiness of the pomelo. The final order of fried banana flower patties (tord man huablee) were also fantastic. They were served with a sweet Thai chili dipping sauce and offered a similar sensation to laab moo tord. A few dishes of white rice completed the food order and at the end of the meal, we were so full that the waiters bagged our leftovers up when asked. I wasn't going to let anything go to waste!

The menu really is impressive and the mix of western and Thai dishes is improved by the Japanese option which is prepared in a separate area by a specialist who's presentation is second to none. You can watch him at work by the Japanese lanterns.

We ordered a few smoothies to enjoy with the meal, and we weren't disappointed. The blueberry was sweet and had a lovely aftertaste and the strawberry and banana one was a great mix and full bodied. Only 65 Baht each and they came in huge jam jars to add to the style.

If you are looking for a cocktail, there is a whole cocktail bar with an extensive list of drinks, and you can even order buckets. The cocktail bar looks great and would be worth a visit even if you aren't going to eat.

The spectacular food was matched by the surroundings. A lovely table next to a small pond with a fountain and lots of trees made the evening seem even more special.

I can't recommend Krua 9 x 9 highly enough and will be getting back there regularly to try the whole menu (frog, Indian style mashed potatoes, New Zealand green mussels with cheese, baked cod with asparagus, what a menu!) - and to make sure they stay open.
