The Hard Rock Hotel @ Pattaya

I absolutely love Korat, I honestly think it's the best place to live in Thailand. And one of the best things about it is that it's an excellent base to live in all year round, then get out of whenever you fancy a change for a weekend or longer. Whether it's a trip up-country to visit Chiang Mai, a big city trip to Bangkok, or visiting the sea in places like Koh Chang or Pattaya.

If Pattaya is your choice for your next weekend away I would highly recommend checking out the Hard Rock Hotel. It's situated on Beach Road, overlooking the sunset of the Gulf of Thailand, and has recently completed a full renovation which took 15 months to complete. The new aesthetic is infused with youthful energy, the love of music, and a passion for life.

Located just three and a half hours from Korat by car, it's a great place for play, meetings or parties, whatever you fancy for a long weekend away to be honest.

The 323 rooms & suites include exceptional Rock Star Suites, new accommodation for families with kids, luxurious digs for Composers and Executives, and Sea & City view Deluxe rooms for those on a break, to chill or to work.

The new restaurants-bars-lounges, serve Pan Asian cuisine next to Mediterranean fare in a variety of stylish settings, as well as renowned signature dishes at the Hard Rock Café.

There’s also a new 'Lil' Rock Club' which caters for children aged 3 to 12. The kids are overseen by Lil' Rock Animators who look after them and keep them entertained in the Hard Rock way. Activities available include colouring, bracelet making, paper crafts, the latest games for the Playstation2, Nintendo Wii, Video, DVD and the kid's pool right next door. The cost is 600 Baht for the full day rate including meals, 450 Baht for a half day and 100 Baht for an hour.

As well as the 'Lil' Rock Club', there is a Tabu club for teens and families, a Rock Shop, and lots of live gigs and happenings to check out.

The Rock Spa offers a harmonic symphony of relaxation and treatment for the body and soul. The purpose-built center for relaxation by the poolside offers 5 stylish therapy rooms on the 3rd floor, treatments include Traditional Thai Massage and foot reflexology. The hotel also features an excellent fully featured Gym.

The Hard Rock Hotel is a beautiful resort, the rooms are clean, large sized with big beds and mega comfy mattresses. Every room has the expected list of mod-cons: air-con, Wi-Fi, huge flat screen TV, coffee and tea making facilities, full mini bar set-up, personal in-room safe, IDD telephone, bathrobes, hair dryer and Rock Spa bathroom amenities. In the spirit of rock n' roll every room also has a music system for you to dance through out the day and night if that's your thing, and most rooms also have a balcony to relax on or chuck a TV off of if your feeling incredibly rock n' roll but that's not recommended. While on the subject of the rooms I should add that the room service is quick, and the staff are very friendly.

The Pool is a cool place to hangout and have a few cocktails. It's massive, coming in at approximately 2,000 square meters, making it the Eastern Seaboard's largest free-form pool with an artificial beach. The poolside food and drinks are excellent but a little on the expensive side, especially if your used to Korat prices.

The Hotel rate online is good however to eat and drink at the Hotel is quite expensive, I would recommend trying a few meals at the hotel because they really are good. But also check out some of the excellent and far cheaper local places near the hotel for both delicious Thai and western food.

The breakfast buffet is very good but it is very farang biased, no problem if you are a farang, but it didn't go down to well with the Thai's who were staying at the hotel who all looked bemused while they walked around with their near empty plates.

It's position on Beach Road is perfect being just across the road from the beach and walking distance to shopping. It's a very child friendly hotel with a lot of activities for kids of all ages including the aforementioned 'Lil' Rock Club' and Tabu club.

But for me the main reason that I stay at a Hard Rock Hotel or visit a Hard Rock Cafe is to get a bit of rock 'n roll in, and this hotel is a great place for that. Obviously the whole vibe of the hotel is very 'Rock', but the hotel's owners, Hard Rock Cafe International, Inc. just happen to own one of the largest collections of rock 'n roll memorabilia on earth which is constantly moved around its worldwide cafe's, resorts and hotels. So if you enjoy looking at quality memorabilia then this is the place for you. Some of the items on display on my recent trip included:

  • A white ruff-sleeved shirt worn by Prince on tour.
  • A Gretch Country Gentlemen guitar owned by Neil Young.
  • A pair of boots worn on tour by John 5 while he was playing with Rob Zombie.
  • A costume worn by Marilyn Manson bassist Twiggy Ramirez, while on tour.
  • A dress worn on stage by Sade.
  • A costume worn by the King of Rock n' Roll himself, Elvis Presley!

This is nowhere near a full list of what was on show, just what is shown in the pictures on the left and some other goodies thrown in for good measure.

As mentioned, the collections change constantly as they are moved around the world, so most of the above mentioned items will probably be on display somewhere else by now, but no worries, there is always a number of items which are well worth seeing on any visit.

But the best reason to stay at a Hard Rock Hotel is that they have a hotel guitar rental scheme. Yes, that's right if you want to play some rock n' roll tunes in your room, you just go to reception, pick your Axe from the selection on the wall and it's then delivered to your room with an amplifier, cable and a hard rock pick. Unfortunately Neil Young's Gretch wasn't included in the scheme, I would have stayed there for a week if it had been!

The guitars included are all by Fender, and you have a choice of Stratocasters, Telecasters, Jazzmasters and even a Kurt Cobain signature model Mustang. And this is all included in the room charge. When you get bored of that particular guitar (as all rock stars do), you go back down to reception and just choose another, rock on!

Over all the Hard Rock Hotel is highly recommended even if you wouldn't exactly consider yourself a rocker, but if you are you will love this hotel that offers an experience that is as stylishly rock ‘n’ roll as it is unique. Turn up the volume on your next Pattaya weekend away and try it out.
