Fancy Meal Out @ Mix Restaurant

Mix is a lovely place to go for a family meal, date or special occasion. It is part of an award winning chain that also have restaurants in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Vientiane and Myanmar, with Korat being the 5th to open.

They serve a vast fusion menu, with Thai, western, Japanese and Chinese influences and are reasonably priced for such a high end venue. The restaurant is smart, with nice decor and a large furnished open rooftop garden.

The service on arrival was great when we went, as they asked whether we would prefer to sit inside downstairs in the aircon or take advantage of the view upstairs on the cushioned outdoor seats. The restaurant is in the middle of a developing part of town in The West Park, which is still under construction, though this isn't a real burden as there was no noise when we went to eat.

As they quote on their website:

'Mix lives up to its name. This bold restaurant takes cuisine by the horns and mixes up food from different cultures, countries, and at times even courses, to create a unique menu that screams Mix.'

I would have to agree. The crab cornettos were a treat; thin cones filled up with crab meat served as a starter or side dish. Their take on Yam Tua Pru was excellent too, with a poached egg served in the tamarind sauce and the presentation was rather spectacular for a Thai restaurant in Korat, as the prawns, squid and red onion were served on the rim of the bowl with a gorgeous soupy version of the dish below. I also particularly enjoyed the chicken in pandanus leaves and the chicken and pork satay sticks, which were big servings of meat, served with a tasty yellow rice. Perhaps a little more satay sauce next time, but other than that, spot on.

They have done very well in taking a new concept and creating a colourful menu to match Mix's vibrant design. Starters are enhanced into mains, elements of desserts are fused into appetisers and soups are deconstructed into entrées. It is very interesting and there is plenty to work your way through (over 250 dishes) so you'll have to go more than once to get to try it all and figure out what they do best.

While the cuisine is all mixed up, the decor is similarly eclectic with cosy garden furniture on the rooftop, formal dining tables and more intimate indoor lounge areas, there is something for everyone and every occasion. One of the real attractions has to be the drinks. Mix presents a choice of over 80 cocktails; 25 of which are 'mind-boggling molecular cocktails' (according to their website) and 500 labels of wine and beers from around the world.

They were chosen by Thailand Tater as one of Thailand's Best Restaurants in 2012 and 2013, by Cleo Magazine as one of Thailand's Most Romantic Restaurants in 2009, as one of the Top Ten Most Chilled Restaurants in Thailand by Manager Online in 2013, and as one of the Best Places to Hang Out by Thailand Restaurant News 2013.

They have also been reviewed by such publications as Gourmet and Cuisine Magazine, Food for Life, Thailand Restaurant News, Living and more. An impressive list of accolades, for an impressive place.

NB. Mix is not to be confused with the coyote bar Mix 2 in the Old Town!
