Australian T-Bone Steak @ The Grill Room, Kantary Hotel

Australian T-bone steak & beef stroganoff with a bottle of red and a mind-blowing cocktail (a flambée special with lemon juice, caramelised pineapple Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum and honey, garnished with honeycomb and a stick of cinnamon) - another fantastic meal at Kantary Hotel in The Grill Room. A shrimp ceviche and avocado appetiser (shrimp, avocado, tomato, fresh herbs, lime on crispy tortilla) and poached pear and gorgonzola salad (pear poached in red wine, mixed greens, Gorgonzola cheese, walnut candy and Balsamic dressing) were excellent starters. A complimentary bowl of assorted breads and bread sticks was served with garlic butter for those that like to pick before the meal arrives.

The Grill Room on the 20th floor of Kantary Hotel on Mittraphap Road offers the a special menu with imported grilled steaks and other meats, pasta dishes, soups, salads, appetizers, entrées and desserts. The wine list is big for Korat and the cocktails must be the best in Isan - I have rarely tried better in Europe.

It's a nice restaurant to get dressed up for and with Grab taxis you can easily avoid driving and enjoy the drinks they have on offer. The service is friendly and thorough, though some of the staff are still learning the processes of an international standard hotel.

The 600g T-bone arrived on a big wooden board with lovely cross hatched grill lines, a garnishing of parsley, rosemary and thyme, a grilled tomato and the pièce de résistance: a baked semi bulb of garlic that had caramelised and turned to mush. A selection of side dishes (choose 2) include French fried potatoes, roasted fingerling potatoes, truffle mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, green beans, sautéed assorted vegetables, creamed spinach, asparagus or steamed rice.

To round off the meal, select one of the following sauces: pepper, mushroom, mustard, red wine, Béarnaise, Hollandaise, Thai spicy sauce. A sprinkle of rock salt competed the dish.

The steak was served hot and perfectly pink in the middle. The order was medium rare to suit the tastebuds of both parties ordering. With the obvious exception of the thin slither of deliciously rendered fat on one side of the cut of meat, the lean meat was easily sliced through with some pretty heavy duty steak knives. Once in the mouth we're talking about one chew steak here. I miss this so much, but Korat is offering good steak in several restaurants now. It is not cheap, but neither is it cheap back in the West/East/wherever it is that has good steaks. For 1,350 Baht (plus 17% = 1,580 Baht) you expect quality meat and quality accompaniments. I also received excellent service as usual and had another fabulous night in a fine restaurant just 10 minutes drive from my house. Happy boy!
