Afternoon Buffet @ Kantary Hotel Korat

Everyone loves a buffet, it has everything, no need to peruse the menu for ages trying to work out exactly what you want at that particular time hoping that it's to your taste. It's simply a case of get up, grab a plate and off you go...

You can mix and match, you can go through different countries cuisines in any order, you can even have your pudding and then your starter, whatever you want is possible. But there is something that is even better than a buffet, and that's an excellent delicious buffet. And that's what's on offer at Kantary Hotel Korat if you visit on a Wednesday between 11:00am and 2:00pm.

I'll start with the entrées, sorry for getting all foodie, but 'start with the starters' just doesn't work for me. Anyway, back to the food, there was only one soup on offer (which is standard for Hotel buffets) which was Minestrone, but there were Thai starters if you prefer them. The entire buffet menu changes every week so that is obviously subject to change. The soup was delicious, lots of vegetables which still had their crunch, a lovely broth and a high oil content, which may not be to everyone's taste, but exactly how I like it. There was a large selection of breads and buns available, all cooked in-house, which complimented the soup beautifully, plus a choice of salted or un-salted butter.

I then went for the smoked white fish in plum sauce, the fish served off the bone which is always a bonus in my opinion and was very well cooked, the plum sauce was best described as delicate. If your a big fan of plum sauce it may be a little lacking of flavour but it tasted great and wouldn't over power anyone who wasn't a fan of plum sauce. The vegetables were also nicely cooked, al dente as opposed to stewed for hours.

It was then time to try some Italian, I went for the pork Bolognese sauce with extra garlic and chilies and spaghetti. All the Italian selection is cooked to order and the choice is staggering, sauces go from Neapolitan to Carbonara with numerous types of pasta including squid ink linguine if you fancy a colourful plate.

As the Vapors sang 'I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so' it was time to get all oriental and try the Japanese offerings. There was a large selection of sushi, but what I was most interested in was the Salmon Sushi-mi and the Tuna. Both excellent with quality wasabi and soy sauce. Three regular portions of this in a Japanese restaurant would cost you more than the cost of the entire buffet which goes to show the good value on offer.

And finally to the puddings, I have to say this was the highlight of the whole meal, such a wide choice from sponges to cakes, cheesecakes to banoffee pie in a glass, chocolate desserts or fresh fruit. The choice is yours and everything I tried was absolutely delicious, so much so that walking back for seconds was starting to hurt but just had to be done.

The buffets are held every Wednesday lunch time between 11:30am and 2:00pm and Friday evening between 6:30am and 9:00am. The food items are topped up regularly but as is normal in all buffets certain items can get cold, so it's recommended that you arrive on time and get going quickly. If for whatever reason you arrive half way through the buffet I would recommend keeping an eye on the kitchen staff and getting the food after it has been topped up.

Reservations are always a good idea wherever you dine, but for these buffets they are essential. Most are fully booked by the time they come around, which has to be a sign of the quality on offer. So please ring ahead and book your table, far better than turning up un-announced, seeing and smelling the wonderful fare on offer and then being turned away. The hotel staff did tell me that they do try and accommodate everyone regardless of reservations but if there are simply no seats available they have no choice but to turn people away which is completely understandable, so don't forget to give them a call with your reservation.
