Sirloin Steak & Lamb Chops @ The Grill Room, Kantary Hotel

This is a fantastic meal at the Grill Room at Kantary Hotel, Korat, a steak house which opened on the top floor of The Kantary Hotel Korat in December 2017. After perusing the menu for quite a long time, we opted for a starter of gambas ajillo (giant garlic prawns), a wagyu Korat sirloin steak with roasted potatoes, 3 lamb chops with truffle mashed potatoes and veg and a few mind-blowing cocktails. I was impressed with the cut of meat for both the beef and the lamb, as well as the presentation. They came out and looked special. The gravy bowl and the cutlery had weight behind them and added to a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. The waiting staff were a bit nervous, but very friendly and helpful. They wanted us to have a great time, but perhaps had been previously scorned by fussy eaters, so they were understandably somewhat on edge. The prices at The Grill Room are not cheap, so people expect the best. After all, it is the city’s premier (and only) rooftop steak restaurant where you can dine at night
to spectacular views of the city lights.

The steak was a big cut of meat and came with a lovely char on the outside, and medium rare in the middle. Great flavour and a huge portion. My girlfriend was unable to finish it to my delight, so after demolishing the lamb, I helped her out.

The lamb was a cooked rare, with a bright red colour and had a red wine gravy (there was a selection of 3 or 4 sauces to choose from). Each of the 3 chops was juicy, well charred and packed full of flavour. I just love finding a place where my meat isn't cut up into bite-sized chunks for me, and this is certainly that!

Skilled chefs source the best quality meat for your enjoyment and prepare everything to a level not usually seen in Isan. A wide range of seafood as well as international and Thai favourites are also available.

Overall The Kantary Hotel Korat offers 3 high end restaurants that are all excellent, with top chefs preparing quality food, and serving staff that present and deliver your meal in a way that Korat isn't used to yet. For that reason, the experience can vary from customer to customer. I have heard so many positive reviews of the restaurants that mirror my own, and I love eating there, no matter which restaurant, if it's a special buffet or a la carte.

It's hard to think that just a few years ago, Korat had so little western food to choose from that you would be happy eating a burger at a pub or Thai cafe to get your meat eating fix. Things have changed dramatically and we are very lucky to have places like this now. They need to be supported to make sure that the menus stay to our liking. Otherwise, it'll all go back to Thai food and we'll be crying out for a bit of variety again.

One of the best parts of the meal were the cocktails. I have never had a real cocktail in Korat, perhaps even Thailand. They were filled with flavour and really packed a punch, without being overwhelming. I had 2 and I felt in a good place. I'd like to have a go at 3 next time. The bar tender's signature "Amoretto Moustache" literally knocked my socks off and tasted like I could drink them all night, which could be dangerous.

Slight gripe: They could have taken better advantage of being on the 20th floor. The view is nice, but the seating and windows haven't capitalised on the vantage point of the this classy restaurant.

In summary: The Grill Room is the final restaurant to open at Kantary and provides a variety of the best cuts of steak and other meats in Korat, with imported beef, lamb and fish and a range of impressive home made fresh pasta dishes, all served with a roof top view of Korat.
